King Duncan I was the reigning monarch of Scotland in the play Macbeth, until his murder in his sleep at the hands of Macbeth himself (while was residing at Castle of Macbeth in Inverness) in order to fulfill the prophecies of the three witches that had appeared to Macbeth, which said that Macbeth would be king of Scotland.
