This production came from touring UK company Prospect Theatre. Derek Jacobi was enjoying a newfound celebrity due to his role on TV's I, Claudius.
Jacobi had previously played Laertes in Laurence Olivier and National Theatre's 1963 production. This was apparently his first run playing Hamlet. He would reprise the role at least twice, in Prospect's 1979 world-touring production, and the 1980 BBC film, before playing Claudius in Kenneth Branagh's 1996 film.
This is notable for being the production of Hamlet that Kenneth Branagh first saw, and which changed his life forever. The 16-year-old Branagh attended a showing when it came to his hometown of Reading, due to his being a fan of the television series I, Claudiu.
