This was Prospect's second production of the play to star Derek Jacobi.
The production opened July 25th, 1979 at London's Old Vic Theatre and played three weeks before traveling to Denmark to present eighteen performances at Kronborg Castle, also known as Elsinore Castle, the setting of the play. A world tour continued with stops in Egypt, Greece, Sweden, Australia, Japan and China before returning to the United Kingdom for performances in Newcastle and Bradford. The company then returned to London to rehearse for a January 1980 television shooting.)

The 1977 production toured the UK (inspiring a young Kenneth Branagh to become a Shakespearean actor), while this one went across the world, including to Elsinore, Denmark.
Jacobi would reprise the role of Hamlet for BBC's 1980 film, and later directed a 1988 Royal Shakespare Company production starring Kenneth Branagh and starred in Branagh's 1996 film as Claudius.
